Can I sell things on Local2Me?

We allow sales of personal items that are not sold as part of a business. If you are selling it to get rid of it, generally it's fine. If you're selling it to make money for a business, generally it's not OK.

Examples of things to sell here:

• Car (provided you're not in the autos business)
• Used baby equipment
• Used toaster

• Tupperware (new, as your business)
• Hats that you make
• Proofreading services

How do I adjust the amount of email I receive from Local2Me?

If you are getting too many messages, you can do a few things.

• Reduce the size of your community. Local2Me lets you select whom you want to connect with, by distance from you. Go to your My Groups page and then click "Customize" for the group you want to change.
• Filter Local2Me messages. Most email programs can filter your Local2Me messages (e.g., all messages with "[Neighbors]" in the subject line) into a different mailbox. Click here for Univ. of Iowa's primer on How to Filter E-mail Messages.
• Change to email digest or web-only delivery. See How do I change message delivery options (email, digest, web only)?

If you are getting too few messages, you can expand your community size (distance from you). Go to your My Groups page and then click "Customize" for the group you want to change. You can also spread the word to people in your area!

I am moving. How do I change my street address to reach my new neighbors?

By changing your street address with Local2Me, your groups will automatically be changed to connect you in your new location. See changing your address.

How do I unsubscribe?

If you want to unsubscribe because you are moving, consider changing your address with Local2Me instead and connecting to your new neighborhood. Local2Me is available throughout the United States.

If you are receiving too many messages, consider changing the size of your personalized group or email delivery options instead.

To unsubscribe, go to your Delivery Options page and select the community(s) from which you want to unsubscribe (under "delivery options").

How does the Local2Me service work?

Local2Me enables you to easily communicate with people geographically near you who meet the criteria you specify. You choose whom you want to connect with, such as "people within three miles of me." You can then exchange messages with the resulting group via email or the Local2Me web site (message boards).

The system creates a customized community, unique to you. You can think of all the customized groups as overlapping circles, where your circle may have many of the same people as a neighbor's circle.

Local2Me is proprietary software.

Privacy - how do you use personal information about me?

We will not use your email address to spam you or disclose it to any third party without your permission. Please note that when you post a message on a Local2Me forum, your email address is included as part of the message delivered to all community members who receive group messages via email.

Location: we need information about your geographic location to match you with a community of other users. This is so we can connect you with others near you. Feel free to use a nearby street intersection if you are more comfortable with that.

How do I send a message to one of my Local2Me communities?

Once you have set up a community, you can use the web site to post a message (click "Post" link next to one of your communities from your My Groups page) or you can send an email message to the community's address as given in the chart on that page.

If you email, be sure to send your message from the email account you signed up with on the web site, or a secondary email address that you've specified on your profile page.

How do I search the message archives?

Once you are subscribed to a community you may search the archives either from the "Search Archives" box on your main My Groups page or from the search box on any index page while browsing messages within a community.

To browse messages from one of your communities, click on its name on your My Groups page.

I got a message in my email box from a neighbor. How do I reply to it so that the whole group gets my reply?

The group will get your reply automatically, unless you change the To: address during your reply.

How do I reply to amessage in email so it only goes to the other message's sender?

Click reply, and then replace the group address in the To: line by copying & pasting the sender's email address over it.

How do I change message delivery options (email, digest, web only)?

Short answer: go here to change delivery options. Details:

• Individual email delivery. Receive each message individually.
• Email digest delivery. Receive a daily digest, which is a single email message containing all messages from the last 24 hours.
• Web-only delivery. Read all group messages via the web site instead of receiving them as email.

How do I change my email address, street address, or other personal information?

You can change your email address, street address, and other profile information from the Profile link on your My Groups page. By changing your street address, you will connect to groups in your new location.

Why do I see long email addresses like "neighbors+874298@local2me.com" in L2M messages I receive?

Since each user has a unique community, message discussions they start get a special email address so that all responses to the first message go to the same group of people. This address is just for use within that discussion thread; to start a new discussion, use the email address neighbors [at] local2me.com.

What are the advantages of Local2Me for community builders?

Local2Me is unique for community builders because:

• there's no setup - easy growth - groups form automatically as users sign up
• a user doesn't need to know the name of their neighborhood to sign up
• when there's less critical mass, users use broader personal circles to connect with people further away
• as it gets popular, users can tighten personal circles to control message traffic
• people communicate with each other across neighborhood boundaries as well as within neighborhoods - there are many benefits of reaching beyond a single neighborhood's boundaries

What community builders find with doing their own is (1) it's hard to get it going, and (2) once it gets hopping, the community tension of "too many messages" will begin and will never end. With Local2Me, (1) is solved because people typically start with a personal radius of 10-15 miles, and then tune down their personalized settings as things take off. This scales up extremely well. In some areas, many people are down to 1-2 mile circles, because you can reach such a large set of people within just a few miles. In other areas, however, it's still ramping up, so people talk with somewhat wider geographies.
